President Trump said Thursday that he has “no idea” why the Justice Department is investigating Corey Lewandowski for misconduct, but that anyone working for him has to be honest.
Those that are not honest, Trump went on to say, will face the DOJ.
“I want my people to be honest, and if they’re not going to be honest, they have to be prosecuted,” Trump told reporters before departing the White House in response to a question about a reported investigation of Lewandowski.
“I view it as if people are not honest, they’re stealing from me as president, they’re stealing from me,” he said. “So I want my people to be honest, and if they’re not honest, I’ll have my DOJ go and do whatever they have to do.”
The Justice Department is looking into a criminal referral from the Department of Homeland Security Inspect General, according to reports. The accusations include that he profited from his role.
The office has been examining contracting practices at the agency when Lewandowski was there.
Trump said he “will never do anything to stop a prosecution if somebody is dishonest.”
Lewandowski worked alongside former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, who was ousted in March.
“Mr. Lewandowski has not been contacted by the Justice Department regarding any investigation, and he denies any wrongdoing when he was proudly serving his country in a voluntary capacity,” Lewandowski’s attorney Adam Trigg told NewsNation.
Lewandowski was Trump’s first campaign manager back in 2016 and played a role in his subsequent campaigns.
