President Trump on Wednesday floated changing the name of the Strait of Hormuz to the Trump Strait, despite the waterway not having a single owner.

“Now that we have it under U.S.A. control, should we change the name Hormuz Strait to TRUMP STRAIT??? Like America itself, it would be ‘hotter’ than ever before!” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

The strait is an international waterway that has some water in Oman and Iran territories.

The idea of naming the body of water after the president comes after Trump has also suggested that he will make the strait a U.S. territory.

“Pretty soon, I will be declaring the Hormuz Strait a territory of the United States,” Trump said during remarks last month.

He has not elaborated on how he would change the strait’s name or make the critical shipping lane a U.S. territory.

Roughly 20 percent of the world’s oil and gas is shipped through the waterway. The war with Iran has slowed traffic, sending energy prices skyrocketing worldwide. The U.S. maintains its naval blockade on the shipping route.

The war with Iran has surpassed the six-month mark, and still no deals have been made to end the fighting or end Iran’s nuclear program.

The U.S. launched a new wave of strikes on Tehran on Tuesday. Trump has said he is “not trying to force Iran to the negotiating table.”

“I couldn’t care less if they sign a worthless, to them, agreement. I like our position now much better, with almost total control of the Hormuz Strait, and their economy totally collapsing,” Trump stated Tuesday on Truth Social . “They are just playing out the inevitable. When are the Iranian people going to rise up and fight?”
