Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) on Sunday dodged whether he would accept the Alaska Senate election results in the case that Democrat Mary Peltola is victorious in the race against incumbent Sen. Dan Sullivan (R-Alaska).
During an interview on NBC News’s “Meet the Press,” Kristen Welker asked the Palmetto State senator on possibly accepting the Alaska Senate results. Scott did not give a straightforward answer when Welker questioned him initially, so she pressed him again.
“Just to go back to my original question, senator. If Mary Peltola wins, if the election is certified, will you accept the results of that race?” Welker asked.
“Kristen, two things: Number one, Dan Sullivan, the real Dan S. Sullivan, will win, and number two, it actually is a federal offense to confuse voters, that’s the law, and that’s why you’ve seen the Department of Justice ask for — send out 30 subpoenas,” Scott responded, referencing the Department of Justice (DOJ) reportedly issuing dozens of subpoenas linked to ballot-stacking allegations against Peltola.
“So, what we’re going to find out very quickly is who all was involved in this attempt to confuse the voters. It’s okay to expand the ballot, but it is not okay to confuse the voters,” he added.
Last week, The New York Times reported that there was direct involvement from Peltola’s campaign in recruiting a person with the same name as her opponent, the incumbent Sen. Dan Sullivan. The presence of Daniel J. Sullivan on the ballot resulted in the DOJ filing a lawsuit, alleging it gave an unfair boost to Peltola.
The fresh DOJ subpoenas were sent to the Alaska Democrat’s campaign offices, as well as the offices of Daniel J. Sullivan, according to NBC News.
In a Truth Social post last week, President Trump said Peltola should face legal and political consequences.
“It has just been determined that the Democrats in Alaska illegally searched for, and recruited, a man named Dan Sullivan to run against our distinguished Republican Senator, Dan Sullivan, in order to defraud, confuse, and obfuscate the Election, thereby taking votes away from the REAL Senator, Dan Sullivan,” the president wrote.
Peltola has denied multiple times any involvement in the alleged ballot-stacking plot.
The Hill has reached out to Daniel. J Sullivan and Mary Peltola’s campaigns for comment.
