Conservative Fox News commentator Jesse Watters predicted President Trump will not be able to make good on his promise to send a check for $5,000 to every American if Republicans hold both chambers of Congress in Tuesday’s midterm elections.

“I’ve looked at the numbers … it’s not a red wave,” Watters said while smirking during Fox’s election night coverage. “I don’t think we’re going to get our $5,000 checks, and so the Democrats are having a good night.”

Trump had promised to have his administration send checks to every American if the GOP held on to both the House and Senate, a pledge that sparked widespread bipartisan concern about its feasibility and legality.

“The Democrats handed Donald Trump three major problems: the economy, immigration and crime … he solved two out of the three. He didn’t solve the economy,” Watters continued. “He has said short-term pain, long-term gain. To use a golf analogy, he didn’t come to lay up.”

Watters’s comments came during a Fox segment that featured Karoline Leavitt, Trump’s former press secretary, who said — after speaking with the president — he was “cautiously optimistic” about the GOP’s chances in Tuesday’s midterms.

Leavitt joined Fox as a contributor after leaving Trump’s White House.

“The reality of it is history is not on his side,” Leavitt said of the president. “The president has been pragmatic about that, but he still left it all on the field. If voters decided to get up today and turn out the polls, it will be a better night for Republicans, but that remains to be seen.”

The president posted on Truth Social several times Tuesday night complaining about Fox’s coverage of the election results, saying the network was spending too much time highlighting “Dumocrats,” which he argued would turn off viewers.
