2 Iowa GOP reps support Iran war powers resolution for first time

Two Iowa Republicans backed a war powers resolution in the House over the conflict in Iran for the first time, a notable move for two members from the deep-red Hawkeye State as the midterms near.

On Tuesday, the House passed a Democratic-backed war powers resolution with an aim to restrict President Trump’s military actions in Iran, the third time the lower chamber has passed such a measure.

The House voted 220-204 in favor of the resolution, with seven Republicans throwing their support behind it, including Reps. Thomas Massie (Ky.), Brian Fitzpatrick (Pa.), Warren Davidson (Ohio), Tom Barrett (Mich.), Mariannette Miller-Meeks (Iowa), Zach Nunn (Iowa) and Nancy Mace (S.C.).

In a post on the social platform X Tuesday night , Nunn said that “Iran must be held accountable for killing Americans, supporting terrorism, threatening the Strait of Hormuz, and pursuing nuclear weapons.”

“Iowa has already paid a devastating price, including two service members killed by an Iranian drone in Kuwait. Congress owes them, their families, and every American in uniform clear objectives and constitutional oversight,” he added in his post.

Miller-Meeks also made a post on X , writing “I said it in March: the mission had to stay focused and limited, because Americans do not want another forever war,” and that “I will not vote to keep our soldiers in an open-ended war, with Iowans paying too much at the pump.”

Both Miller-Meeks and Nunn’s move in favor of a war powers resolution comes shortly before the Iran war reaches its seventh month. The conflict has proven unpopular among the American public and driven up energy costs as the Strait of Hormuz has been closed.

The two Iowa lawmakers are also facing strong challenges from Democrats in their districts, with nonpartisan election handicapper Cook Political Report placing both of their races in the “toss up” category.
