Live updates: Canadian tariffs take effect as Trump threatens Bombardier in growing trade war

Canada’s retaliatory tariffs against the U.S. went into effect at midnight Tuesday, affecting hundreds of goods, including steel and aluminum, appliances and electronics and wood, pulp and paper products.

There are no reports of negotiations between the two countries. The Trump administration levied 50 percent tariffs on $27.6 billion worth of Canadian goods two weeks ago, raising tensions between the neighboring countries.

President Trump on Monday threatened Canadian aircraft maker Bombardier, posting on Truth Social that it must start building in the U.S. to access the American market. He also posted a map with a U.S. flag covering most of North America, including islands in the Caribbean, as well as Iceland.

Trump on Tuesday morning honored 9/11 first responders at a Steel Across America event, a project by the Tunnel to Towers Foundation that brought a steel beam from the south tower of the World Trade Center to the White House.

The president and a host of GOP members will also head to Dallas for the two-day Republican National Committee Midterm Convention, which will feature two speeches by Trump on Wednesday and Thursday. It comes as control of the Senate has been deemed a “toss-up” Decision Desk HQ .
