President Trump announced plans Saturday to create an “AI Force” as well as appoint a “czar” to oversee the emerging technology’s development.
In a lengthy Truth Social post, Trump called the concerns surrounding a lack of federal AI guardrails a “hoax,” adding he would not allow for the technology’s “decimation” as its U.S.-based industry leaders compete with other countries — namely China.
“We will not in any way hinder or stifle the Growth of this incredible Industry. Rather, we will cherish it, help it, and watch over it, as it grows! However, we will also be looking for BAD, and we can do that, very easily, with our already existing Criminal and Civil Justice System,” he wrote on Truth Social.
The president compared his proposed “AI Force” to the Space Force, which he established during his first term, but did not elaborate on how the agency would operate or what its duties would entail.
For the new “AI Czar” position, Trump said, “Only High I.Q. individuals need to apply!” He did not expand further on the latest iteration of the role.
Trump previously had an AI and cryptocurrency czar, venture capitalist David Sacks, a special government employee who held the post before stepping down earlier this year.
The announcement comes as AI researchers, tech CEOs and global leaders warn about the need for safeguards as the industry develops increasingly powerful AI systems.
For example, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei called for a global slowdown, which was met with agreement from OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Elon Musk, of SpaceX, SpaceXAI and Tesla.
Trump has resisted calls for new federal restrictions, arguing that slowing the industry could threaten the U.S.’s global position in the AI race. His administration has instead emphasized accelerating the emerging technology’s development while using guidelines to address potential issues.
