Man shot, injured in Butler Trump assassination attempt dies

A man who was shot and injured during the assassination attempt on President Trump at a 2024 campaign rally in Butler, Pa., has died.

Jim Copenhaver was one of two event attendees injured during the attack. One rallygoer, Corey Comperatore, was killed after Thomas Matthew Crooks opened fire in an attempt to end the then-presidential candidate’s life.

Copenhaver was struck by two bullets in his arm and abdomen, leaving him with nerve damage. He died at 76 years old.

The official House Republican Conference’s social media account shared the news of Copenhaver’s death Thursday.

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Jim Copenhaver, who was gravely wounded in the horrific shooting in Butler, Pennsylvania,” the GOP account posted.

“Jim endured unimaginable hardship with strength and perseverance,” the post continued. “We join his family and loved ones in mourning his loss and praying for them during this difficult time. May he rest in peace.”

Republican lawmakers took to social media to respond to the news of Copenhaver’s death Thursday.

“My prayers are with the family members of Jim Copenhaver, as they grieve his loss,” Arizona Rep. Andy Biggs (R) wrote in a post . “His passing should serve as continued motivation to provide sufficient answers and closure for the investigation into the attempted assassination of President Trump in Butler, where two innocent lives have now been lost.”

Rep. Lisa McClain (R-Mich.), the chair of the House Republican Conference, extended her thoughts to Copenhaver’s family.

“Jim was critically wounded in Butler, Pennsylvania, during the attempted assassination of President Trump,” McClain wrote on social media . “He carried those injuries with strength and perseverance. May he rest in peace.”
