Watch live: Hinojosa speaks after midterm win against Abbott

Texas Gov.-elect Gina Hinojosa (D) will hold her first news conference Thursday afternoon, days after defeating incumbent Gov. Greg Abbott (R) in Tuesday’s midterm elections.

The win ends more than three decades of GOP control of the governor’s mansion.

Hinojosa, who will become the state’s first Latina governor, is expected to outline her priorities as she prepares to take office in January. The Democrat has pledged to overhaul the state’s education policies, including replacing Texas Education Commissioner Mike Morath and challenging the state’s school voucher program.

Her victory was part of a broader Democratic sweep in Texas , which also saw state Rep. James Talarico win his Senate race against Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (R).

The event is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. EST.
