California Gov. Gavin Newsom puts Sacramento-area mansion up for sale

As California Gov. Gavin Newsom is set to leave the state's highest office at the end of this term, he and his partner, Jennifer Newsom, have placed their Sacramento-based mansion on the market.

The 12,663 sq ft mansion is located in Sacramento County's unincorporated area at 7640 Tobia Way in Fair Oaks , about 25 minutes from downtown Sacramento, and was listed for sale by Sotheby's International Realty for a whopping $7.5 million.

The property is "an extraordinary showcase of Santa Barbara-inspired architecture," hidden behind a private gate and "exceptionally secluded."

"This remarkable Fair Oaks estate is privately positioned along the bluffs on 8.2 acres, where sweeping views and exceptional privacy create a truly rare setting," reads the listing description.

"Spanning approximately 12,663 square feet, the residence offers an unparalleled combination of grandeur, comfort, and effortless entertaining, with a resort-style pool, full-size tennis court, private casita, and impressive 5,000-bottle wine cellar. The expansive primary bathroom is a destination unto itself, designed as a serene retreat with two generous walk-in closets, dual showers and water closets, and a luxurious soaking tub."

Matthew Hindy, the listing agent with Nick Sadek Sotheby's International Realty , noted that the mansion was "a beautiful property" and that it "holds a special charm."

The Newsoms purchased the property in December 2018 for nearly half the price, at $3.7 million, shortly before he assumed the Governor's Office. Newsom and his family did briefly live in California's governor's mansion, which was renovated for former Governor Jerry Brown, before ultimately relocating to the Fair Oaks property.

However, the sale of Newsom's Fair Oaks property may not come as a surprise to anyone who follows the governor closely, as in 2024, the Newsoms purchased a $9.1 million home in the unincorporated community of Kentfield.

As Newsom's tenure as California's governor drew closer to its end, he spent less time in Sacramento, splitting his time between the Capitol and the San Francisco Bay Area.

Ultimately, the sale of this property marks the end of Newsom's time in the Sacramento area and leaves an opportunity for him to prepare for a potential 2028 presidential bid, as he is seen as a likely frontrunner in the upcoming election .
