Tim Curry, star of ‘Rocky Horror’ and ‘It,’ dead at 80

(NEXSTAR) – Tim Curry, the British actor whose long career included a cult role in “The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” has died. He was 80 years old.

He died at his home in Los Angeles, his manager Marcia Hurwitz confirmed to The Associated Press on Wednesday. The cause of death was not immediately released.

The Los Angeles Police Department told Nexstar’s KTLA that officers responded to a home in North Hollywood on Tuesday night for the death of a man in his 80s but gave no further details.

The actor had suffered health issues since a stroke in 2012. He attended a 50th anniversary screening of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” in a wheelchair last year.

“I still can’t walk, which is why I’m in this silly chair, and that’s very limiting. So I won’t be singing and I won’t be dancing very soon. I still have real problems with my left leg,” he told The Hollywood Reporter at the time.

Playing Dr. Frank-N-Furter in “Rocky Horror” may have been Curry’s big break, but it was far from his only big acting credit. He was also known for playing the scary clown Pennywise in “It,” Rooster in the 1982 adaptation of “Annie,” Wadsworth in 1985’s “Clue” and Roger Corwin in “Charlie’s Angels” in 2000.

“Hollywood tends to use European actors, especially English ones, as villains because they prefer heroes to be Americans. I think we come with a certain amount of style, which is hard for American actors to acquire,” Curry told the Associated Press in 1997.

His IMDb page lists more than 240 other acting and voice acting credits dating back to 1968.
