Juror says testimony by Lindsay Clancy’s ex-husband influenced her

( NewsNation ) — A juror in the Lindsay Clancy mistrial claimed in a new interview that testimony from the Massachusetts mother’s ex-husband Patrick Clancy was “very impactful” in her decision to vote not guilty.

“I think the prosecution tried to nudge Patrick (Clancy) to say something derogatory, and he wouldn’t,” juror Paula Devlin told “ CBS Mornings .”

“And that was very impactful, even after all this time and even after knowing this happened and losing his three children, he still couldn’t say anything really bad about her,” she added.

Clancy is still facing murder charges in the deaths of her three young children. A five-week trial ended in a mistrial last week, after the jury failed to come to a unanimous verdict .

The jury was split 11-1 in favor of finding her not guilty by reason of insanity , according to the jury foreperson, after her attorney argued she was suffering from postpartum psychosis and shouldn’t be held criminally responsible.

Dr. Resnick’s testimony also made an impact

Devlin also cited Dr. Phillip Resnick’s testimony on altruistic filicide as influencing her vote. Psychiatric News describes this condition as a situation where a mother believes “death to be in the child’s best interest.”

Resnick, a forensic psychiatrist and expert in filicide (the killing of a child by a parent), testified on behalf of the defense that Clancy murdered her children not out of malice, but because she was so deeply suicidal that her psychosis made her believe they couldn’t live without her. Prosecutors had argued that the murders were premeditated.

“All throughout the trial … there had been nothing but good said about Lindsay and how amazing of a mother she was, how much she loved her children,” Devlin explained. “And then to hear somebody talking about a real reason why all of a sudden this could happen, that was really impactful.”

Patrick Clancy’s lawyer threatens legal ‘consequences’

As the case has made headlines in recent months, videos have circulated on social media of people theorizing about Patrick Clancy’s potential culpability.

Some have focused on whether he gave his wife enough support, based on what he knew about the state of her mental health at the time. Others have gone as far as making unsubstantiated claims that the mother is innocent and that her husband was responsible for the deaths.

Amid the online speculation, the ex-husband’s attorney has threatened legal “consequences” over what he described to CBS News as a “relentless, escalating and destructive defamation campaign” surrounding his former wife’s murder trial .
