Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin said Democrats should move to end President Trump’s tariffs and the Iran war if they take power after the midterm elections.
Martin told NewsNation’s Blake Burman that exit polls are showing voters believe the country is going in the wrong direction and laid out the issues Democrats should address if they take power over the next Congress. Decision Desk HQ (DDHQ) predicted before Election Day that Democrats are likely to win both chambers this midterm cycle.
“I think the first thing they should do is repeal the tariffs that Donald Trump put in place,” Martin said.
For Congress to exercise its constitutional authority over tariffs, it would first need to overcome an extremely likely presidential veto once it sends legislation to Trump’s desk. To reach the 67-vote threshold to overturn that veto, Democrats would need to convince a large chunk of Republicans to vote in favor — which would not be an easy task.
Martin said the second priority for Democrats should be ending the Iran war. The Senate has come close to passing a resolution to pull troops out of Iran multiple times, but it has yet to reach a simple majority threshold. That resolution would also be subject to a veto and would need 67 votes to overturn.
“Second is to end the war, which is driving up energy costs and fuel costs in this country at a time when people are already economically dispossessed and feeling a lot of anxiety,” Martin said.
Once they tackle tariffs and the war, Martin said Democrats should push to pass an agenda that tackles high costs, reforms the healthcare system and targets corruption. He said Democrats will work to end many Trump policies if they take the majority.
“I believe within the first hundred days, you’re going to see a very aggressive House and Senate to repeal a lot of the terrible policies that Donald Trump and his administration have put in place,” Martin said.
