Jake Reiner opens up on parents’ death, brother’s arrest in first interview
“My parents had unconditional love for all three of us,” he added, also noting the toll of his brother’s imprisonment.
( NewsNation ) — Jake Reiner said that he is constantly reminded of his circumstances in his first interview since his brother, Nick Reiner, allegedly murdered their parents.
“It’s been 8 months. It feels like 8 years at the same time. And it also feels like 8 minutes,” he told KABC-TV’s Mark Cota-Robles in a Thursday preview of the interview on “Good Morning America,” according to People Magazine . “Because every moment that I wake up, I’m reminded of my reality.”
Actor and director Rob Reiner and his wife, photographer and producer Michele Singer Reiner , were found stabbed to death in their Southern California home in December 2025. In the interview, Jake Reiner recalled the moment his sister, Romy Reiner, called to report what happened: “Romy told me our dad was dead and then she said, ‘I can’t find mom.’”
“My parents had unconditional love for all three of us,” he added, also noting the toll of his brother’s imprisonment. “Yeah. I mean, he’s in jail … I physically lost my parents. And then Nick was arrested. And now it’s me and Romy.”
Nick Reiner was indicted by a grand jury earlier this month and now faces charges including two counts of murder with the special circumstance allegations of multiple murders and murder by means of lying in wait. The indictment will expedite the case to a jury, bypassing a preliminary hearing.
Reiner had previously been charged with first-degree murder, but prosecutors secured a special circumstance enhancement that alleges he was lying in wait to murder them. The special circumstance can increase potential penalties in the sentencing phase of a trial to the death penalty or life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Reiner, who lived with his parents, previously pleaded not guilty to killing them. In the past, he had spoken openly about his struggles with drug addiction and periods of homelessness and co-wrote a movie inspired by his struggles with his father.
