Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback and television analyst Tony Romo and CBS have parted ways after the commentator was arrested on a drunken driving charge earlier this year.
Romo was placed on leave by the network following an arrest on suspicion of drunken driving in July, body camera footage of which was widely circulated on social media.
Footage showed Romo taking sobriety tests and talking with police officers about his history of head injuries.
“CBS Sports and Tony Romo have mutually agreed to part ways,” CBS said in a statement on Friday, according to The Athletic , which noted he had four years and more than $70 million remaining on a 10-year contract worth $180 million he signed in 2020.
After his arrest, Romo announced he would seek treatment for substance abuse and indicated it was his intention to return to the broadcast booth.
“I’m going to use this time to take a break, something I’ve never done before, and focus on my health and my family before moving on to my next opportunity,” he said in a statement shared with the outlet Friday. “I am grateful for my time with CBS Sports and for the continued support of my family and friends, as well as the NFL community and fans.”
Romo is one of the most recognizable sports media personalities in the country and has called major NFL match-ups along with longtime sportscaster Jim Nantz for CBS, including three Super Bowls.
