Wisconsin’s GOP nominee for governor reups calls to end Iran war

Rep. Tom Tiffany (R-Wisc.), the Republican nominee in Wisconsin’s competitive gubernatorial race, reupped his calls Tuesday for President Trump to end U.S. military operations against Iran.

FOX6 News reporter Jason Calvi pushed Tiffany on why he has repeatedly not supported a war powers resolution in the U.S. House despite publicly calling for the war to end.

“The president has final say in regards to this,” Tiffany replied, according to a video shared by Calvi on social media.

“I just believe that we should be exiting Iran, that it’s time to move on,” the GOP lawmaker added. “We’ve degraded their nuclear facilities. We degraded their military. Most of their ships are at the bottom of the ocean. Time to come home, take care of business here in America.”

The House has passed three war powers resolutions to urge the Trump administration to cease military operations in this conflict, which has now stretched over six months. These resolutions, which do not carry the force of law, are intended to send a strong message to the administration.

In a successful resolution in the lower chamber of Congress last week, seven Republican lawmakers crossed party lines to support the measure. Tiffany did not cast a vote on this resolution.

During a May appearance on the “DrydenWire” podcast , the Republican lawmaker also said he believed it was “time to wrap up the war.”

“We have degraded Iran’s nuclear and military capability,” he told host Ben Dryden. “Most of their ships are on the bottom of the sea, and we’ve largely degraded their nuclear capability. It’s time to wrap things up and come back home.”

The GOP lawmaker faces a tight race against Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley (D) this November. A Marquette University Law School poll conducted last month found the Democratic nominee with a 5-point advantage in this race.

Crowley slammed Tiffany for his reupped calls to end the Iran war, labeling the Republican’s comments “rich” in a Tuesday social media post .

“You had 5 chances to do something about gas prices and you sold out WI to Donald Trump,” he wrote.
