Former Vice President Kamala Harris will campaign for Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed (D) at a campaign event next week, according to multiple reports.
Harris will join El-Sayed, a doctor and former head of health departments in Detroit and Wayne County, at a roundtable focused on Black maternal health on Tuesday, The Associated Press reported Wednesday.
“Vice President Harris looks forward to returning to Michigan to help turn out the vote in this critical state,” Harris spokesperson Eduardo Negrón told the outlet. “It is critical we flip the Senate so we can bring down prices and stand up to Donald Trump’s corruption.”
The Hill has reached out to Harris’ team for comment.
El-Sayed told Politico on Wednesday that he looks forward to her arrival in Michigan, saying people in communities like Detroit “look up to [her] as an inspirational leader.” The candidate noted Black maternal health is an issue both he and Harris have been “a leader on.”
“I’m grateful that she’s coming in and having conversations about what it takes to get the turnout up, so that we can get on to working on some of these issues in the U.S. Senate,” he added.
Harris endorsed El-Sayed in his campaign against Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Mich.) in August, the latest of several establishment Democrats to announce their support for the populist candidate.
“While Michiganders struggle to afford everyday essentials — housing, gas, groceries, health care, and child care — Trump and Republicans in Congress are giving away $1 trillion in tax breaks to the wealthy and powerful,” Harris said in her endorsement.
“Abdul knows that we need bold solutions to the crises facing America’s working families, and he is ready to take on this fight. I proudly stand with him to ensure we win a Democratic Senate majority in November,” she added
The event comes one week after Rogers declined to participate in a debate with El-Sayed , hosted by Fox 2 Detroit on Tuesday. Rogers accused the moderator, Roop Raj, of showing bias toward El-Sayed — a claim that Raj has denied.
The Republican candidate said he “ never agreed ” to a debate. El-Sayed spoke next to an empty podium for the hour-long debate.
Harris has given support to several campaigns this election cycle amid speculation that she could run again for president in 2028 — after her 2024 loss to Trump. Though several Democratic candidates have moved away from the former vice president in an effort to distinguish themselves from the public’s perception of her time in office.
Were she to make a third bid for the presidency, California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) — another potential 2028 Democratic presidential contender — said he would not pursue the position . The two worked together as elected officials in San Francisco, when he was the city’s mayor and Harris it’s district attorney.
“I know her base of supporters. I know her friends,” Newsom told CNN’s Jake Tapper while fly fishing in Montana. “The [Venn] diagram on that is just pure crossover. I wouldn’t do that to people.”
