Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) released a fundraising email focused on the federal investigation for which agents raided her home on Monday.
“Stand with Ilhan Omar,” the email reads, according to a screenshot obtained by The Hill’s partner network, NewsNation. “Donald Trump and DHS have opened a baseless, partisan investigation into Ilhan Omar, and she needs us by her side as they escalate their attacks.”
“Chip in whatever you can to make sure Ilhan can beat Trump and keep fighting for our progressive values in Congress,” the email concludes.
On Monday morning, Homeland Security Investigations — the investigative arm of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) — searched Omar’s home as part of an ongoing criminal investigation into the Minnesota Democrat, according to a statement from the Department of Justice (DOJ).
White House border czar Tom Homan confirmed in September that Omar was under criminal investigation but did not give further details about it.
“I’m confirming that ICE is, yeah — look, I said months ago that there’s something that’s been reported and needs to be looked at,” Homan said.
It is unusual for the DOJ to take major action against candidates for office within 60 days of an election, and the midterms are only three weeks away.
Omar condemned the raid in a post online, calling it “political intimidation.”
“I’m ok. Make no mistake: this is an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement,” she wrote on the social platform X . “For ten years, Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns. This is just the latest escalation in his campaign of political intimidation.”
Omar has repeatedly clashed with President Trump during her tenure in the House, criticizing the president’s comments about Somali immigrants and his accusation that refugees from the African nation are “completely taking over the once great state of Minnesota.”
The president also lashed out at Omar at a gaggle with reporters before he rallied in Ohio, calling her “totally crooked” and a “terrible person.” At a Cabinet meeting earlier this year Trump also called her “garbage” while saying he did not want Somali people in the U.S., and at one point he said Somalia “stinks.”
