Jeffries does not rule out pursuing Trump impeachment if Democrats win House

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) said Sunday he has not ruled out pursuing the impeachment of President Trump if Democrats take back the House in November.

“No, we haven’t ruled anything in and we haven’t ruled anything out in terms of impeachment,” Jeffries told George Stephanopoulos on ABC’s “This Week,” when the host asked him whether House Democrats would pursue impeachment on day one if they are in the majority.

The New York Democrat noted Reps. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) and Robert Garcia (D-Calif.), the respective ranking members of the House Judiciary and Oversight panels, will lead the charge on holding the Trump administration accountable if they chair those committees come January.

“Both of them are doing a tremendous job,” Jeffries said. “We’ve got to follow the facts, apply the law, be guided by the Constitution, and then let the chips fall where they may, in the best interests of the American people.”

The House impeached Trump twice during his first term, first in 2019 over his threat to withhold military aid to Ukraine if the country’s president, Volodymyr Zelensky, did not investigate then-presidential candidate Joe Biden.

The lower chamber then impeached Trump again after the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. The Senate acquitted the president both times .

Trump said last month he expects Democrats to impeach him if they take back the House.

“They’re going to impeach me. They have no idea why,” the president said at a rally in South Carolina alongside Sen. Darline Graham (R-S.C.).

As of Friday, Decision Desk HQ gives Democrats a 68 percent chance of retaking control of the House. The minority party needs to flip a net of three seats to take back the gavel.

As for his caucus’s other priorities if they were to secure a majority in November, Jeffries highlighted three: nullifying Trump’s tariffs on foreign trading partners, forcing the president to wind down the six-plus-month Iran war and “restoring” Affordable Care Act subsidies that expired at the start of this year.

“These are some of the things that I think we can begin to do, but it’s going to have to be a bold, aggressive legislative effort that we sustain, not just for the first 100 days, but for the first year and the entirety of the Congress,” the House Democratic leader told Stephanopoulos.
