D.C. City Council Member Robert White is projected to win the race to be the District’s next delegate to the House of Representatives, according to Decision Desk HQ (DDHQ).
White will take over for longtime Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-D.C.) as a non-voting delegate in the House. He beat Republican Denise Rosado and Green Party candidate Kymone Freeman for what was widely viewed as a safely Democratic seat.
DDHQ projected that White defeated Rosado by 81.3 percentage points with 71 percent of the vote reported as of 10:16 p.m. EST.
White ran on defending the District from President Trump’s efforts to inflict control over the city, safeguarding the municipal budget and pushing back on any effort to diminish D.C.’s self-governing, home rule status.
“Together, we will fight Trump and his allies in Congress as they attempt to use D.C. as a testing ground for their radical right-wing agenda,” White says on his campaign website .
White also pledged to fight for affordable housing and access to health care, childcare and well-paying jobs. The councilman said he would continue the fight for D.C. statehood, a cause long elevated by Homes Norton.
“D.C. is not asking America to save us,” White’s website says. “Give us the voice, freedom, and power we have earned, and Washingtonians will help lead America forward.”
