Charlamagne knocks Jeffries over Kushner meeting: ‘Yo Hakeem, we don’t believe you’

Charlamagne Tha God slammed House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) over his private meeting with Jared Kushner, President Trump’s son-in-law, accusing the Democratic leader of undermining his own attacks on Trump and his allies.

“Yo Hakeem, we don’t believe you,” Charlamagne said Tuesday on “The Breakfast Club,” days after The New York Times reported Sunday that Jeffries and Kushner met privately ahead of November’s midterms.

Jeffries had sought to quell backlash over the meeting by saying “no one from the Trump Cartel is getting a pass.” The House Democratic leader has said Kushner, an informal Trump administration adviser, initiated the meeting. The two reportedly met to discuss common ground issues such as housing and affordability.

Charlamagne argued Democrats shouldn’t use dire language to describe Trump and his movement while privately seeking common ground with people in the president’s orbit.

“Saying people are threats to democracy and fascists and crooks — when you say that, and then we have private meetings with them, working with them, it undermines all of that,” he said.

Kushner, who is married to Trump’s eldest daughter, Ivanka Trump, does not hold an official position in the administration, but he has worked as a foreign envoy in major conflicts, including in Iran.

News of the meeting sparked criticism from some Democrats, prompting Jeffries to defend his decision. In a video posted Monday, Jeffries said he was willing to discuss ways to bring down costs for Americans but insisted that would not stop Democrats from scrutinizing the Trump administration.

“We’re going to follow the facts, apply the law and be guided by the Constitution beginning on day one. And hold the crooks accountable.”

“That’s why Hakeem is getting this smoke, that’s why he’s getting this backlash from people,” he said.

He also questioned why Democratic leaders appear more willing to find common ground with Trump allies than with colleagues in their own party, including progressives.

“I also don’t understand why Democrats have more smoke with people in their own party, like the DSA [Democratic Socialists of America] or anyone labeled a socialist, than they do with MAGA,” Charlamagne said.
