Coons to face off against Katz in solid blue Delaware Senate race

Democratic Sen. Chris Coons (D-Del.) is set to sail through to another term in the Senate after winning his Tuesday primary in his solidly blue state, Decision Desk HQ projects.

He’ll face off this fall against former state Sen. Michael Katz, who faced U.S. Army Reserves Col. John Shulli in the fight for the Republican nod. But in a state that voted for ex-Vice President Kamala Harris by 15 points in the last presidential election, Coons is expected to cruise to a fourth term.

Coons received 78 percent of the vote with 86 percent of precincts reporting in the Democratic primary, while on the Republican side, Katz received 77 percent to Shulli’s 23 percent with 83 percent of precincts reporting.

Coons, who entered the upper chamber in 2010, easily defeated a handful of Democratic challengers, including Eric Hansen, who appeared on the ballot under the name “E. No-Trump Hansen.”

Democrats dominate in Delaware, holding both Senate seats, the state’s lone House seat and the governor’s mansion.

Delaware’s primaries marked the last of the midterm cycle, kicking off a seven-week general election home stretch.
