President Trump raised concerns Saturday about some Democrats calling for the impeachment of Republican officials, referring to the threats as “extortion at the highest level” and asking the Justice Department to “look into this.”
“The Democrats are going around threatening a lot of people … with Impeachment and many other forms of punishment, even though they admit they have no reason to do so, and there have been no impeachable acts committed, or even thought of, by the victims of this illegal process,” the president wrote in a Truth Social post Saturday.
“This is extortion at the highest level, and they should be held accountable for this,” he added.
Just two days after Election Day, two House Democrats voiced their support of impeaching GOP officials like Attorney General Todd Blanche and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. This came shortly after Democrats seized control of the House and the Senate after winning tough races in battleground states like Texas, Michigan, Maine, Kansas, Iowa and Ohio.
Rep. Hank Johnson (D-Ga.), in an interview with SiriusXM’s “The Dan Abrams Show,” said Thursday, “I personally believe that the offenses of Todd Blanche demand that he be impeached and convicted and removed from office.”
Fellow Democratic Rep. Deborah Ross (N.C.), who also appeared on the show, echoed Johnson’s statement — noting she thinks removing Hegseth should be a top priority.
But calls for Hegseth’s impeachment came from both sides of the aisle, with Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) telling CNN he plans to call for a vote to impeach the defense secretary.
In Wednesday night post on social platform X , Massie said, “There is one contingency in which I won’t reintroduce the articles of impeachment: Hegseth resigns.”
In another post the following day, the Kentucky Republican said his impeachment resolution is “ a much gentler version of what’s coming when Dem’s control Congress. They’ll have hearings & trials.”
Hegseth responded to the impeachment threats Thursday in a video posted to X, in which he said, “A disgruntled, defeated congressman, along with all his Democrat allies, has also dropped sham articles of impeachment against yours truly.”
“This is Weaponization and Lawfare at another level,” Trump said in his Saturday post.
“I am ordering the Department of Justice to look into this criminal act, immediately!,” he added.
