Trump gives high marks, no details, to Xi talks: ‘Our farmers are going to be very happy’

President Trump praised Chinese President Xi Jinping and his wife, Peng Liyuan, for their visit to the U.S., saying “great strides” have been made without giving any details.

“We’ve had a tremendous visit from two spectacular people, and we’ve really enjoyed it,” Trump said at the tea ceremony in the White House’s Red Room. “And I think we’ve made tremendous strides. We’ve made great strides, very positive for both countries.”

He also thanked the media for the “fair coverage” of the Chinese leader’s visit amid a battle with the press in which Trump had sought to block access for three organizations over their coverage of him.

Trump said he thinks U.S. farmers “are going to be very happy” because of the visit, but didn’t provide details for why.

“A lot of very positive things happened, but America is very happy about this visit, and I’m sure China is very happy also,” he said. “Great things for both countries, and it’s been just very, very productive.”

Xi, for his part, invited Trump and first lady Melania Trump to visit China. Trump traveled to Beijing in May to meet with Xi, but the first lady did not attend.

The Chinese leader said that during the May visit, he and Trump “agreed on the vision of building a constructive China-U.S. relationship of strategic stability.”

“This time, we’ve agreed to add new substance to it, that the relationship will be a constructive one of strategic stability on the basis of respect, fairness, and reciprocity,” he said.

He also noted that he and Trump will see each other twice more this year — during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in China in November and the Group of 20 summit in Miami in December.
