Live updates: Kennedy Center case returns to court; Trump order renames Lake Ontario

President Trump signed an executive order Thursday afternoon that renames Lake Ontario to “Lake America,” following through on an idea he floated as the U.S.-Canada trade war hit fever pitch in recent days.

Trump’s battle to make the Kennedy Center his own returns to court Thursday, where a judge will hear arguments about whether Trump’s name may be inscribed on the building.

Earlier this week, the Justice Department argued in court filings that the renowned performing arts facility will suffer financial ruin if his name isn’t attached and may need to be demolished if it doesn’t receive renovations — for which Trump would also like recognition. A hearing related to the case is set for 2 p.m. EDT.

In Texas, an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer accused of shooting a Venezuelan man in the leg during an immigration crackdown in Minnesota earlier this year was released from jail Thursday morning. A day earlier, a judge declined to force his extradition to Minnesota. Christian Castro was freed from custody just before 7 a.m. local time, Cameron County Sheriff Manuel Treviño confirmed in an email to The Hill.

The president will head Thursday to Texas to headline a fundraiser for the Republican National Committee that aims to boost the chances of Republican Senate candidate Ken Paxton, the state’s attorney general.

The Texas Senate race is considered a toss-up by election watchers, with Democrat James Talarico and Paxton running neck and neck in recent polls.

Before leaving for the Lone Star State, the president has a policy meeting and signing time on his schedule.
