President Trump said the stock market “suffered one of the Worst Days in History” on Thursday, a day after it surged following Democrats’ sweeping victories in the midterm elections.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average went up by 1,104 points on Wednesday after the opening bell. But on Thursday, it dropped by more than 2,100 points from the opening bell and closed down by 1,833 points relative to the day before.
“The Stock Market crashed today because the Dumocrats had a big Tuesday — So sad to see, you only have yourselves to blame!” Trump wrote on Truth Social late Thursday.
In a subsequent post , the president said the stock market “suffered one of the Worst Days in History based on the results of the Election.”
“Such a sad thing to watch! It took so much work to get us to a level that no one has ever seen before, and then this,” he continued. “Remember, it wasn’t Republicans, it was Dumocrats. Do not fear, however, we will soon, one way or the other, be BIGGER AND STRONGER THAN EVER BEFORE.”
The Nasdaq composite and S&P 500 , up on Wednesday by more than 500 and 120 points, respectively, also tanked by roughly 1,422 points and 335 points on Thursday.
On Tuesday, Democrats took control of the House and Senate for the next term, securing historic wins in battleground states such as Texas, Iowa, Ohio, Maine, Michigan and Kansas.
Many Democratic candidates campaigned on addressing cost-of-living concerns while on the trail. The winning strategy was highlighted by some Republicans after the midterm results, inccluding Texas Sen. Ted Cruz (R), who acknowledged that affordability was a top issue for voters.
Vice President Vance, in a post on the social platform X , also pointed to the ongoing Iran war as the main issue behind the GOP losses, but he also mentioned cost of living as a key factor. Some Democrats pushed back on his rhetoric, arguing he supported Trump’s operation in the Middle East.
Recent polls have shown that rising prices and cost-of-living concerns were at the top of most voters’ minds heading into Election Day. A recent Reuters/Ipsos poll found 48 percent of voters ranked the issue as the most important factor when deciding whom to vote for.
A separate Gallup survey , conducted last month, found nearly half of respondents marked the economy as an extremely important factor before casting their ballots.
Trump on Friday touted artificial intelligence — which he has sought to rebrand as “ superintelligence ” — and its potential economic impact.
“As President, I am 100% in favor of Super Intelligence (SI), and will work with the many States in the U.S. that want to become RICH by having them,” he wrote on Truth Social , likely referring to expanding AI data centers .
He added, “They are GOLD, and only foolish leadership will say ‘NO’ to the riches they bring!”
