Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) had a stroke, his office said in a Sunday statement, adding that he is “responding well to treatment.”

“Yesterday afternoon, Senator Murphy started experiencing numbness in his arm while at his son’s hockey game. He was taken to a local hospital, where it was discovered he had experienced a stroke,” Allison Herwitt, Murphy’s chief of staff, said.

“He was transferred to Johns Hopkins [University] for further monitoring and is responding well to treatment. The doctors are encouraged by his progress, he is awake and alert, and we are optimistic he will make a full recovery,” Herwitt added.

Murphy, 53, has served in Congress since 2007 . He was in the House, representing Connecticut’s 5th Congressional District from 2005 to 2013, then moved up to the Senate in 2013.

Earlier this year, Murphy’s Connecticut colleague, Rep. Jahana Hayes (D), said she had been hospitalized for a blood clot.

“A health update from me. Listen to your body, and seek care if you’re not feeling well. Thank you to all the Dr’s, nurses, technicians and the entire team at St.Mary’s Hospital for the excellent care I received,” Hayes said on the social platform X at the time.
