Young voters appeared to distance themselves from Republicans in this year’s midterm election blowout for Democrats, according to a new poll.

In The AP Voter Poll , which surveyed 2026 midterm voters, 73 percent of voters aged 18 to 29 backed a Democrat for their House seat, while 25 percent of the age group backed a Republican.

According to The Associated Press , which partnered with SSRS for the poll, the age group was about evenly divided between President Trump and former Vice President Kamala Harris in 2024.

Fourteen percent of those who backed a Democrat for their House seat were aged 18 to 29, while 6 percent of those who backed a Republican for their House seat were in the same age group.

The congressional map on Tuesday was painted blue, with the Democrats locking down both the House and Senate majorities and securing a chance to restrict Trump’s power until the end of his second term.

The Democrats’ victories came amid a challenging political environment for the GOP, with Republicans weighed down by issues including the unpopular war in Iran, Trump’s slumping approval numbers and concerns about the cost of living.

Democrats are projected to end up with 261 seats in the House and 55 seats in the Senate , according to Decision Desk HQ, marking gains for the party that currently holds 214 seats in the lower chamber and 47 seats in the upper.

The success for Democrats on Election Day is a far cry from where the party was in the wake of the 2024 election, an era that was marked by infighting, soul-searching and frustration.

The AP Voter Poll took place between Oct. 19 and Nov. 3, featuring 81,290 voters and a margin of error of 0.5 percentage points.
