( NewsNation ) — Voters heading to the polls had several issues on their minds, with the release of information surrounding the Jeffrey Epstein investigation among them.

The investigation — and collections of documents widely known as the Epstein files — has remained a contentious issue across the political spectrum since President Donald Trump took office in January 2025.

The case, spanning more than two decades, has kept the Justice Department at the center of efforts to unseal a large collection of court records identifying dozens of the disgraced financier's associates.

Epstein files accountability will be on winning Democrats' list: Chris Cuomo

As for Democrats, they have been calling for accountability with the files after another allegation was made Tuesday. One unnamed Democrat told NewsNation's Chris Cuomo that will happen if the party is victorious in the midterms.

"That is going to be a focus for us," the Democrat told Cuomo. "The American people demand it, and it's the right thing to do. So that is going to be on the agenda."

NewsNation's Leland Vittert added that the incoming election results suggest voters are motivated by more than just affordability concerns, pointing to corruption as another key issue driving their decisions.

"Democratic consultants found that any time they could tie a Republican candidate to an Epstein issue, it was extraordinarily successful for them in focus groups," he said. "Now, say whatever you want about the issue, what it means, but unquestionably, Democrats viewed that and have used that throughout this campaign."

Cuomo noted that a Democratic victory could present its own challenges, arguing that the party would be expected to confront any allegations that arise rather than ignore them while in power.

"Again, what got the Democrats here will not get them where they want to be in the next cycle," he said. "So they talked a lot about Epstein. Let's see what they do about it."

Dems win could turn Epstein issue into political distraction: Katie Pavlich

Katie Pavlich argued that if Democrats win, it will be interesting to see whether they are willing to investigate members of their own party.

"It's not quite a Republican issue, but you know, you want to go investigate Barack Obama's former White House counsel, who was deeply involved in the Epstein situation," she said.

"But I think if they will find accountability on that issue, it might come too close to the party when they're trying to get other issues done. And it could turn into a political distraction for them, as it turned into the Republicans."

Mike Nellis, a former senior adviser to Kamala Harris, pushed back on Pavlich's remarks, arguing that the Epstein case serves as a gateway to broader concerns about corruption in Washington.

"Everything that Donald Trump has done in the last two years has been about enriching himself and protecting a very small, powerful group of people," Nellis said. "What Katie just said is right: There are a lot of Democrats that are in the Epstein files to prosecute all of them. I would encourage my party to be aggressive in that."
