Democratic Rep. Vicente Gonzalez is projected to win reelection in Texas’s 34th District, defeating GOP challenger Eric Flores to defend the battleground seat, according to Decision Desk HQ.

The South Texas lawmaker was first elected to the House in 2016, serving three terms representing Texas’s 15th District before winning the 2022 race for the state’s 34th District.

The moderate Democrat served on the House Financial Services Committee and has introduced bipartisan legislation aimed at supporting the state’s oil and gas industries and to increase transparency around military funding.

The Democrat campaigned on lowering living costs, safeguarding benefits for seniors and veterans, protecting women’s rights, and expanding access to healthcare and education.

The 34th District runs along a stretch of Texas’s border with Mexico and covers part of the Rio Grande Valley, including a portion of Corpus Christi and the border city of Brownsville.

The district — which was redrawn in the GOP’s favor in 2025 during a mid-decade redistricting push led by state Republicans — includes a large Latino population and is considered a swing district. Just a little more than 50 percent of voters in this district supported former President Biden in the 2020 presidential election, while nearly 55 percent backed President Trump in the 2024 race.

Flores, the Republican nominee in this race and a U.S. Army veteran, put up a competitive fight after handily winning the state’s GOP primary election. The Cook Political Report, a nonpartisan election forecaster, rated the November race as a “toss-up.”

The incumbent lawmaker’s victory marks a win for House Democrats as they fight to regain their majority in the lower legislative chamber.
