Disney is betting big on streaming as the company gets set to air the Super Bowl next year in Los Angeles.
The NFL’s championship game will air on Disney+, the media conglomerate’s flagship digital subscription platform, as its main television network ABC and sports arm ESPN broadcast the game on linear channels.
This will be the first time ESPN has ever broadcast the Super Bowl, which each season earns the largest single-night television audience of the year and reaps the host network billions in advertising revenue.
Disney putting the Feb. 14, 2027, game on its top streaming platform will make it available in more than 55 international markets, including Spanish-speaking Latin America, Brazil, the Caribbean, South Africa and Australia and New Zealand.
The NFL has made a major push into these markets in recent years, hosting more games overseas this season than any year prior.
ESPN will, as a test run, broadcast two “Monday Night Football” games on Disney+ in the weeks leading up to the Super Bowl, including a Week 7 tilt between the Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles.
Disney is one of several major legacy media companies that have poured millions into live streamed sports as major tech companies like Netflix, Amazon and Apple get more aggressive in the sector.
Last year’s Super Bowl, broadcast on NBC and its streamer Peacock, was watched by more than 125 million around the world and was also believed to be the most-streamed Super Bowl in history.
