Michiganders on Tuesday will pick their next U.S. senator to serve for a six-year term, with two-term incumbent Sen. Gary Peters (D) opting not to seek reelection.
The Michigan race is perhaps one of the most high-profile midterm contests this year, taking place in a state President Trump won in two out of his three presidential campaigns, including 2024. The Wolverine State was eyed by Republicans as a potential flip opportunity early in the cycle, and the nomination of public health official Abdul El-Sayed made them even more optimistic.
El-Sayed, who led the health departments in Detroit and Wayne County in the last decade, very narrowly won the nomination earlier this year over more moderate U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens in a contentious and closely watched race. State Sen. Mallory McMorrow also ran in the primary and, at one point, led in some polls, but she dropped out before the election.
On the Republican side, former Rep. Mike Rogers is mounting a second bid for the upper chamber, after previously having fallen short two years ago against now-Sen. Elissa Slotkin, who was at the time a member of the U.S. House.
Polls close at 8 p.m. or 9 p.m. EST, depending on location within the state.
