Sellers: ‘Biden didn’t get bullied by Canada’

CNN political commentator Bakari Sellers on Friday said President Trump is being “bullied” by Canada amid an escalating trade war, comparing the current president’s handling of Canada with that of previous administrations.

“We’re getting bullied by Canada,” he said during a CNN panel discussion. “Joe Biden didn’t get bullied by Canada. Barack Obama didn’t get bullied by Canada. George W. Bush didn’t get bullied by Canada.”

Sellers also slammed Trump for signing an executive order Thursday that formally renamed Lake Ontario, which is shared between New York and Canada, to “Lake America.”

“We’re a deeply unserious country right now,” Sellers said during a CNN panel discussion. “I mean, the fact is, Lake Ontario, the name is over 400 years old. It predates the Confederation of Canada. It predates the Declaration of Independence. Like, what are we doing?”

The name change is the latest flash point between the two nations, which announced a series of tit-for-tat tariffs after Canada backed out of trade negotiations with the U.S.

Trump announced 50 percent tariffs on $20 billion worth of Canadian imports. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, in response, announced “dollar for dollar” retaliatory tariffs.

Carney slammed the Trump administration for the move to rename the lake, citing its existence well before Canada became a country and before the signing of the U.S. Declaration of Independence. Other Canadian officials also aired their disagreement over the name change, which Canada is not required to adhere to.

Trump has renamed other prominent landmarks during his second term. On the first day of his second term, he signed an executive order renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America.”
