House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) said Wednesday he thinks Republicans will take back the House in two years despite a Democratic blowout in this year’s midterms.

“This Democrat House majority will be led by the most radical and extreme leftists in American history. However, Republicans will never stop fighting to defend the Constitution and protect the foundations that have made America the greatest nation in the history of the world,” the Speaker said in an early-morning post to the social platform X.

“We will continue pressing forward with our agenda of common sense, and our vision to make America great again—and come 2028, we WILL take back the House and we will finish the job,” he added.

The congressional map was painted blue Tuesday, with the Democrats reclaiming both the House and Senate — and securing a chance to restrict President Trump’s power in the latter half of his second term.

The Democrats’ wins came amid challenging political territory for the GOP, with Republicans dragged down by issues such as the unpopular war in Iran, Trump’s slumping approval numbers and concerns about the cost of living.

Democrats are projected to finish with 258 seats in the House and 55 seats in the Senate , according to Decision Desk HQ.

For his part, Johnson said on a staff call Wednesday he would not make a bid for House minority leader, two Republican staffers told The Hill, teeing up a tense battle for GOP leadership in the lower chamber.

The Louisiana Republican had a tense tenure as House Speaker, one that featured internal GOP fighting, tight voting margins and struggles to keep his conference together over key issues.
