Trump, speaking with Fox News late Tuesday night, was asked whether he would make changes to his Cabinet considering the election results.
“No, I don’t think so. Had nothing to do with my Cabinet,” Trump said.
“It was just a point — honestly, look — I’ve been doing a lot of great things for a long time,” he said. “It’s just a point in time. Just a point in time. Just the way it is. There was a mood in the air, I guess.”
Trump has ousted and seen some departures from his Cabinet this year, including the firing of both former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and former Attorney General Pam Bondi.
CBS News reported some Trump aides are predicting that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth could be a target of some of Trump’s blame for the party’s loss.
Trump told The Wall Street Journal that the Iran war “was a piece of” the cause of Republicans losing.
Democrats won control of the House and Senate Tuesday night, grabbing hold of some key races like the Texas, South Carolina and Kansas Senate seats, among others.
Trump said the loss was due to him not being on the ballot and repeatedly said that the president’s party usually doesn’t win the midterms.
“I shouldn’t feel guilty because virtually … no matter how good or bad or Republican or Democrat he or she is, but no matter how good the president is, you lose,” Trump said.
“I don’t know why. Nobody’s explained that, but it’s almost every single time,” he continued.
Trump told the outlet that voters just “didn’t like the candidates.”
Earlier Tuesday, Trump said Republicans lost because he wasn’t on the ballot.
“And if I was, we would have won IN A LANDSLIDE!” he wrote on Truth Social. “Thank you for your attention to this matter.”
