(NEXSTAR) – Amid the ongoing trade war with Canada , President Trump said Tuesday that renaming Lake Ontario as “Lake America” is under “serious consideration.”

Trump didn’t give many details in a Truth Social post , but explained that the U.S. doesn’t “expect to be doing much business with Ontario any longer.”

While Ontario Premier Doug Ford dismissed the idea , calling it “a lot of rhetoric” while speaking to CNN, the Great Lake would not be the first site to be renamed since Trump took office for a second time.

After taking office in January 2025, Trump signed orders to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America, and Mount Denali as Mount McKinley .

In February, North Carolina military base Fort Liberty was reverted back to Fort Bragg . The base had been known as Fort Liberty since 2023, when Congress, as part of a congressionally mandated rule to rename installations honoring Confederate generals, changed it.

Back in December, the Trump administration changed the name of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory to the National Laboratory of the Rockies .

Trump has also called for other things outside his purview to be renamed, like reverting the name of the Washington Commanders back to a dictionary definition of a slur against Native Americans.

Trump’s name, signature, and likeness have also found their way onto several other places during his second term. That includes “limited edition” passports , National Park Service passes , and currency .

His name has also been added to the Kennedy Center and the U.S. Institute of Peace building, and Florida’s Palm Beach International Airport has adopted the name “President Donald J. Trump International Airport.”
