GOP nominee for Texas House seat apologizes for ‘crude’ online posts

Texas state House candidate Jorge Borrego issued an apology Wednesday for past posts that featured “crude and immature jokes” after laughing the posts off earlier this week.

“In no ways do those past posts represent my current sentiments and feelings,” Borrego wrote.

He added that the posts stemmed from his childhood “in an environment where drug and alcohol abuse were common” where he used “dark humor to cope with trauma I did not yet know how to process.”

The candidate website for Borrego stated that “when his father was incarcerated, his family faced eviction, uncertainty, and the kind of hardship too many families carry quietly.”

The posts on Twitter, now the social media platform X , were written between 2011 and 2013. He used terms racial slurs and lewd derogatory language.

The Republican candidate initially responded to reports about that post by saying in a Monday post , “I’m 30… so yeah I was teenager…”

“I was 16 lol,” he continued in another Monday post .

Borrego is running in the general election for Texas House of Representatives District 118 on Nov. 3, against Democratic candidate Kristian Carranza.

She lost in 2024 for the same Texas House seat by 3 points against incumbent state Rep. John Lujan (R), who failed in his bid for the state’s 35th Congressional District.

In Carranza’s Wednesday statement regarding Borrego’s posts, she called them “vulgar” and said that he was “unfit and unable to serve in a position of trust.”

“Jorge bragged about trafficking women, repeatedly and publicly solicited nude photographs, and has sent more than 150 lewd, racist, and perverse tweets,” she added.

If she were to win, it would be the first time since 2020 the seat was held by a Democrat.
