Half of Democratic voters say they expect their party to retake the House and Senate in the November midterm elections, mostly in response to President Trump’s policies and actions, according to a poll released Wednesday.

A Politico poll found that 50 percent of Democratic respondents believed their party will take over the House and Senate due to Trump’s actions, compared with 35 percent who said the party will claim Congress because candidates ran strong campaigns.

Forty-six percent said they will vote to oppose Trump, and 37 percent said they’ll vote to support a candidate in their area.

Conversely, 41 percent of MAGA-aligned voters said Republicans will lose both chambers only if they run weak campaigns, and 22 percent said it will be because of Trump’s actions.

The poll showed that 43 percent of Democratic midterm voters believed the blame would be on Democratic candidates for running weak campaigns should Republicans maintain control of both chambers of Congress. Another 22 percent said it would happen based on Trump’s actions.

Among MAGA-aligned voters, 37 percent said they would credit Trump’s actions, and 36 percent said they would credit strong Republican campaigns if the GOP keeps control of Congress. Another 17 percent told pollsters GOP control of Congress will be the result of weak Democratic campaigns.

Slightly more non-MAGA Trump voters said the GOP’s loss of Congress would be because of Trump’s actions (31 percent) and weak Republican campaigns (29 percent), while nearly a quarter said it would be because of strong Democratic campaigns.

Forty percent said the GOP keeping its majority in both chambers would likely be based on strong Republican campaigns, while 22 percent said it would be because of Trump’s actions and 25 percent said it would be because Democrats campaigned poorly.

“Trump is getting his wish: The president is, in effect, on the ballot and remains the main character of this election cycle,” Politico wrote about its poll findings. “That’s causing major headwinds for GOP candidates, who already face an incumbent disadvantage from voters who historically seek change from the party in power.”

“Trump’s approval rating is historically low, and polls suggest voters blame him for the affordability crisis at the center of both parties’ messaging,” the outlet added.

Trump and other Republican lawmakers predict Democrats will seek to impeach the president if they gain control of Congress — a possibility that some Democrats, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.), have not ruled out .

“It’s guaranteed, probably on the first day — first or second day,” House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) said Tuesday in an interview with Scott Jennings, a pro-Trump pundit. “Remember, they’ve already filed articles of impeachment in this Congress. And they’re raring to go.”

The Politico survey was conducted Oct. 3-5 and included 2,001 respondents with a margin of error of 2.2 percentage points.
