Mother of Renee Good says she voted for Trump, calls for ICE accountability

Donna Ganger, the mother of Renee Good, who was fatally shot by a federal immigration officer in Minneapolis earlier this year, said Tuesday she voted for President Trump and thought that federal immigration officers would “protect” Americans.

Ganger said it is “torture” that “as a mom and as a family, we could not protect” Good, who was killed by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer on Jan. 7 in an incident caught on video that triggered a nationwide discussion on the Trump administration’s immigration efforts.

“But no one can protect against others who are determined to disregard our country’s constitutional rules and values,” Good’s mother added. She spoke during a public forum hosted by Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) and Rep. Robert Garcia (D-Calif.).

“I’m a registered Republican,” Ganger said. “I voted for President Trump under the impression that these agents were here to protect the citizens of the United States, innocents like our family and the others here, against terrorists, certainly not to accuse those of us here of being terrorists and take precious lives.”

After the officer fatally shot Good, a 37-year-old American citizen with one son, multiple Trump administration officials said the woman committed “ domestic terrorism ” by allegedly driving her car toward the ICE officer.

“This was an act of domestic terrorism,” then-Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said in January.

Video taken by the officer on his cellphone, though, appears to show Good turning her car away from him before the fatal shots were fired.

The incident, along with the fatal shooting of 37-year-old Alex Pretti by Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents Raymundo Gutierrez and Jesus Ochoa later that month, sparked backlash to the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown in Minneapolis.

Blumenthal said Wednesday that Congress “must hold” ICE and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) “accountable” for deaths involving federal personnel.

“Totally unacceptable that there has been no real investigation into DHS/ICE related deaths & injuries,” Blumenthal wrote on the social platform X .
