Mumbai: Around 300 people were detained on Sunday as they began to gather at Dadar’s Shivaji Park for Cockroach Janta Party’s protest over alleged electoral fraud for the second consecutive day. They were released after Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Aaditya Thackeray, his brother Tejas and their cousin MNS’s Amit Thackeray intervened with an impromptu sit-in along with scores of supporters near Shiv Sena Bhavan in Dadar. The Thackerays warned that protests across the state would intensify from Monday.Police said they were in the process of filing an FIR over the Shivaji Park stir for unlawful assembly.“If police seal one location, we will agitate elsewhere,” Aaditya told reporters after the detainees were released. “This is an undeclared Emergency. Any of us could be arrested any time. It’s not just students but other citizens who are agitating. It is BJP versus Bharat. The agitation will continue till chief election commissioner Gyanesh Kumar resigns,” he said.MNS said it had intimated police that a protest will be held at Shivaji Park at 4pm on Monday. Aaditya said the details of the agitation will be shared on X. “It is our responsibility to provide you with a safe space,” he said.Amit said he was taking a walk in the evening when he saw police stopping young people. “Have they converted Shivaji Park into a war zone? What kind of way is this to rule the state and country? I’m going to come here every day. Let them detain me,” he said.Aaditya said the Centre had put more forces in Delhi than it had during the Kargil war. “Why is BSF in Delhi, deployed against Indian citizens?” he asked.CJP and left-wing organisations had called for a protest at 4pm at Shivaji Park on Sunday. Police deployed heavy security at Dadar Metro station and Dadar railway station to prevent protesters from gathering near gate 6, close to the statue of Meenatai Thackeray. All roads leading to the entrance were barricaded as a precautionary measure. Shetkari Kamgar Paksh leader Samya Korde was also placed under house arrest. Can’t we say anything against govt?” she said on X. “Supreme Court has stated that the right to a completely peaceful movement cannot be stopped. Mumbai police should watch this video. The right to conduct peaceful movements exists in democracy. How can they pick us up like this?”A 25-year-old protester suffered a panic attack while in detention at Tardeo police station and was rushed to Nair Hospital. “He was taken to the hospital and has since been released from the police station,” said a police official.Around 600 were detained for turning up for a protest at August Kranti Maidan on Saturday and were released later.
