Johnny Depp Continues His Hollywood Return in First Trailer for “Day Drinker” with Penélope Cruz and Madelyn Cline

Johnny Depp is continuing his return to Hollywood in his new movie Day Drinker , which just released its first trailer on Thursday, Sept. 24

The Marc Webb-directed film also stars Penélope Cruz and Madelyn Cline

This fall's Ebeneezer and Day Drinker will serve as Depp's first two films from a major distributor since 2018

Johnny Depp is continuing his return to Hollywood in Day Drinker .

Lionsgate released the first trailer for the upcoming action-thriller from director Marc Webb , which costars Penélope Cruz and Madelyn Cline alongside Depp, 63. Cline, 28, portrays a bartender on a private yacht who serves a mysterious guest in Depp's lead character, who appears to be an Australian man and — perhaps — also a vampire.

"A private-yacht bartender encounters a mysterious, onboard guest (Johnny Depp)," reads an official synopsis for the movie. "They soon find themselves entangled with a criminal figure (Cruz, 54) and connected in ways no one saw coming."

Written by Zach Dean, Day Drinker will mark Depp's second film from a major distributor since Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (2018). Since the end of his highly publicized defamation trial with ex-wife Amber Heard in 2022, he has starred in the French film Jeanne du Barry , which opened the 2023 Cannes Film Festival and directed the film Modi: Three Days on the Wing of Madness . This November, Depp will star in the upcoming adaptation of A Christmas Carol titled Ebeneezer .

Day Drinker also marks the fourth big-screen collaboration between Depp and Cruz after Blow (2001), Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011) and Murder on the Orient Express (2017). Aside from Depp, Cline and Cruz, the Day Drinker cast also includes Manu Ríos, Arón Piper, Juan Diego Botto and Anika Boyle. Director Webb ( Snow White ), 50, previously said in a statement, "I'm excited to be starting production with Johnny, Madelyn, Penélope and this incredible cast."

Back in June 2025, Depp and Cruz were seen stepping out together in June at the Museo Reina Sofía in Madrid, where they posed in front of Picasso's Guernica . Two photos shared by the museum in a joint Instagram post with Depp showed the actor and his frequent collaborator dressed in casual-elegant attire for a smiley selfie and a further-away shot.

"We're in a beautiful location with a fantastic crew and a thrilling, ferocious story to tell," Webb added at the time. "This is gonna be fun."

Day Drinker is in theaters March 26, 2027. Before Day Drinker releases, he will return to theaters in Ebenezer on Nov. 13.
