Andrew Shue and Marilee Fiebig —Amy Robach and T.J. Holmes’ exes —are engaged after 3 years together

Andrew Shue confirmed that he proposed to Marilee Fiebig earlier this year.

The Melrose Place star and the lawyer connected as their former spouses, Amy Robach and T.J. Holmes, made headlines for their romantic relationship.

"We're very grateful and hopeful," Shue told PEOPLE.

"We're very grateful and hopeful," the Melrose Place alum told Entertainment Weekly's sister site PEOPLE in an interview published on Wednesday. "I don't know how it happened, but there's a happy ending."

Shue and Fiebig famously got together months after their respective exes —and former GMA3 coanchors —Amy Robach and T.J. Holmes became romantically involved. Robach and Holmes made headlines in November 2022 when they were photographed cozying up. The news anchors later claimed they were separated from their spouses at the time. Robach and Shue finalized their divorce in March 2023 while Holmes and Fiebig's marriage officially ended in October 2023. (Robach and Holmes got married last month .)

"I had to accept my own part in marriage not working out for me and in not understanding myself well enough and not understanding what matters in a relationship well enough to find the right person for me, and that has been an extraordinary gift," Shue told PEOPLE. "Again, I don't know how it happened, but I can say I'm grateful."

He added: "I had to grow through a lot of pain and a lot of struggle and a lot of humility. I think the magic of love is when you go from a need to giving."

The actor confirmed on Wednesday that he had proposed to Fiebig earlier this year. The engagement came after Shue launched his The Forum nonprofit , "a virtual town hall to bring people together to create the renewal agenda" in January.

"It's one thing to work on projects that you think can help people and change the world," he explained. "The most important project is your family and building a foundation for your kids and creating a home and showing them a loving relationship they can see and experience."

Shue is the father of three sons: Nate, 30, Aidan, 28, and Wyatt, 23, with ex-wife Jennifer Hageney. Fiebig, meanwhile, shares daughter Sabine, 13, with Holmes.

When discussing how he and Fiebig got together, Shue said "it just happened." The actor referred to it as "freak luck" that they were able to get together romantically. "This just happened to be a circumstance that allowed for that," he continued. "I don't think there was anything other than this just happened to be our way of getting to know each other and being able to share ourselves with each other in a time where we both needed a friend."

He went on to compare the "equilibrium" going on in his life right now to what's happening in America. "We've been through a lot and we're ready to balance it out, but it's only going to happen through collective action and if we turn back towards each other."
