Princess Kate's best red carpet looks follow a familiar formula — with some standout exceptions
The Princess of Wales doesn't walk a red carpet often so when she does, she makes it count.
Kate, Princess of Wales, knows how to make a red carpet entrance and tonight she'll have another opportunity as she and Prince William attend the London premiere of Digger , joined by Tom Cruise and other cast and crew members.
But choosing the right look involves far more than plucking a dress off a runway or rummaging through a fashion house's archives to find the perfect gown.
As a future queen, Kate's options are more limited. She has to balance the glamour of the occasion with the need not to wear anything too bold, while delivering a look that quietly demands attention.
Each appearance is a "carefully selected strategic decision," Bethan Holt, author of The Duchess of Cambridge: A Decade of Modern Royal Style , tells Yahoo. "You are never going to see her wearing an especially revealing gown, but she is savvy enough to know that her look will be beamed around the world and likely steal the spotlight from the actors," Holt says.
But there's room to experiment. Movie premieres offer Kate a chance to swap the formality of other royal engagements for something more playful. "We often see her experimenting for these appearances and pushing the boundaries just a little more than normal. She doesn't need to be as formal as she would for a State Banquet, so she can have more fun," Holt says.
That can mean taking inspiration from the movie being premiered — a glittering gold gown she wore in September 2021 (pictured lower down) being a particularly memorable example.
"Sometimes, she plays into the themes of the film, such as when she wore a dazzling Jenny Packham 'Goldfinger' gown at the premiere of No Time to Die, which was proof that she's not afraid to step into her inevitable place as the center of attention," says Holt. "Other times, she takes the opportunity to lean into a more fashion-centric approach, as we saw with her pared-back Roland Mouret look for the Top Gun: Maverick premiere in 2022."
The result is a red carpet formula that has remained remarkably consistent — with just enough surprises to keep things interesting. Here are some of Kate's most memorable looks.
Returning to the Royal Variety Performance after missing the 2024 edition while recovering from cancer treatment, Kate attended the London event in a velvet, off-the-shoulder gown in a festive green shade by Talbot Runhof. The brand, founded by American Johnny Talbot and German Adrian Runhof, told People it was only told 30 minutes before Kate's arrival that she was wearing the look. A glittering box clutch and diamond chandelier earrings completed the look.
Pairing black opera gloves with a white dress at the 2023 BAFTA Awards was a rare fashion risk for Kate, but it certainly made a statement and transformed the Alexander McQueen dress that the royal had worn to the same event in 2019.
This deep blue, caped Safiyaa dress, complete with shoulder pads, was a real statement of power when worn to London's annual Royal Variety Performance in 2023. Meghan Markle wore a similar dress in a lighter shade and without the shoulder pads, by the same designer, during her 2018 Fiji tour.
A monochrome Roland Mouret dress was Kate's pick at the Top Gun: Maverick London premiere in 2022. The off-the-shoulder dress design recalled the Alexander McQueen gown she wore to the 2017 BAFTAs, reinforcing the silhouette as one of Kate's go-to choices for major red carpet events.
Departing from her usual color scheme in favor of a green gown (green being the hue most associated with the Earth and environment), Kate borrowed this look from British rental platform Hurr while at the 2022 Earthshot Prize in Boston.
Arguably Kate's most iconic after-dark look yet, this glittering gold Jenny Packham gown (complete with matching cape, giving real regal oomph) was fitting for a film franchise as legendary as Bond and will go down in royal fashion history books.
Another sequined Jenny Packham dress — first worn during Kate and William's 2019 tour of Pakistan — was brought back for the 2021 Royal Variety Performance. This time, the floor-length gown's emerald shade felt fittingly festive for the mid-November event.
A decade after debuting this lilac Alexander McQueen gown at the 2011 BAFTAs, the royal returned to the dress in the spirit of sustainability for the 2021 Earthshot Prize in London.
Kate shopped her own wardrobe again for the 2020 BAFTAs and rewore an Alexander McQueen dress first worn during the 2012 royal tour of Malaysia. The custom dress was designed by the royal's wedding dress designer, Sarah Burton, and worn with Van Cleef & Arpels jewelry.
This blush pink Gucci look, which the royal rewore at the 2026 BAFTAs in London, featured the same floor-sweeping length and off-the-shoulder neckline that she favors for red carpet events.
For her BAFTA debut, Kate had a real high-fashion moment in an Alexander McQueen dress. Featuring slim, off-the-shoulder sleeves and a tiered floral design, it was a custom take on a look from the British brand's spring/summer 2016 resort collection.
For a London movie premiere in 2016, Kate chose a white lace-trimmed dress by British label Self-Portrait. But the standout detail was the skirt's thigh-high slit — a departure from the more covered-up silhouettes she typically favors on the red carpet.
