Spice Girls fans feel duped after social media tease wasn’t for tour, but a music re-release

Spice Girls fans are telling you what they want — what they really, really want — and it’s a tour that they aren’t getting any time soon. The disbanded girl group excited their followers on Wednesday with a social media post teasing a big announcement for the following day. A short clip posted to Instagram showed an issue of “The Stage” magazine left on a set of stairs before zooming into a clasified advertisement seeking Spice Girls Fans who are a “superfan, a collector, a music lover.” “No sheet music required but you will need a vinyl or cd player,” the ad said. Fans immediately jumped to speculation on what it could be, with many hoping for a possible reunion. “If it’s a world tour, I’m selling my house to buy tix,” one Instagram commenter wrote. Another wrote, “please say it’s @spherevegas,” referring to the popular Las Vegas venue where the Backstreet Boys are currently in residency. But some should have slowed it down and read the sign. On Thursday, the Spice Girls account announced a re-release of “all the singles” with b-sides and surprises “from the vault” on CD and vinyl. A previously unreleased demo of a song called “Do You Think About Me” was also made available on streaming services Thursday. The full collection will release in November and ranges in price from $128.99 to $380.99, according to the band’s website. The re-release is meant to honor the 30th anniversary of their single “Wannabe,” the hit that changed the trajectory of their lives. It was a blow to the ‘90s band’s most loyal fans, who were ready to promise they would be there in the stands. “Negotiating with my husband on my price cap for Spice Girls tickets today was for NOTHING,” one woman wrote in the comments. “Guys we want two things- Spice World on streaming platforms and a tour with the full line-up,” another Instagram user wrote. “Please make it happen.” “I hear the millennial sigh of devastation from across the world,” one person said. The Spice Girls have been asked repeatedly about a tour in recent years in interviews, but it appears that a reunion performance with all five original members is a pipe dream. There was a small tour across the U.K. and Ireland in 2019 that didn’t feature Victoria Beckham, aka Posh Spice. Beckham expressed her excitement to go watch her former bandmates even if she wasn’t going to be on stage. The fashion mogul has said in the last year that she hasn’t performed in years and doesn’t feel that she is the strongest singer or dancer. She told Andy Cohen on his radio show in October that she didn’t think she could even make a world tour work with the demands of her business. “Before I was in the Spice Girls, I was so self-conscious and they made me feel that I was good enough, but being on stage, I realized as fun as it is, you know, it’s not ultimately what I want to do anymore,” Beckham said. Melanie Brown, or Scary Spice as she’s known to fans, reiterated that a tour was not happening in an interview with Hello! magazine published in April. “I’m 50. You can’t be nagging everyone to go on tour if they don’t want to,” Brown said. “I laid that to rest when I turned 50.” But the women are still close friends. All but Beckham were in attendance for Melanie Chisholm’s wedding earlier this year. And though she couldn’t be there for Sporty Spice on her big day, Beckham designed the singer’s wedding dress, according to Vogue. All five women were together earlier this year, according to social media. Beckham’s youngest son posted a video on Instagram in February of the Spice Girls singing their song “Viva Forever” around a dinner table while he played guitar for him.
