From the rush of local trains and rain-soaked streets to the quiet stretch of the sea, artist Swati Goel turns her attention to the emotional landscape of Bombay in her seventh solo exhibition, emotions of (BOM)bay. On display at the Nehru Centre’s AC Gallery in Worli, Mumbai, from October 13 to 19, the exhibition explores the city through its contradictions, relationships and everyday experiences. For Goel, Bombay is more than its familiar landmarks or physical geography. It is a city shaped by the people who inhabit it and the emotions they carry through its restless routines. The local trains, for instance, become spaces where ambition, fatigue, hope and resilience intersect, while brief encounters between strangers point to a shared experience of navigating the city. The exhibition also looks at the contrast between the city's constant movement and its quieter moments. Along the coastline, the sea offers a space for reflection and release, providing a counterpoint to the crowded streets and the urgency of urban life.Bombay's contrasts form another thread through the works. Skyscrapers rise alongside densely populated neighbourhoods, prosperity exists alongside hardship, and everyday struggles are often accompanied by unexpected acts of generosity. Rather than reducing the city to a single mood, Goel explores these opposing realities as part of its character. The monsoon, too, features in the artist's interpretation of Bombay. Rain alters the city's colours and rhythms, bringing both disruption and beauty. Romance finds expression in smaller, familiar details: late-night conversations, cutting chai, rain-soaked streets and streetlights. Together, these moments reflect how personal memories and emotions become intertwined with a city's identity. At its heart, emotions of (BOM)bay considers Bombay a city of dreams, shaped by persistence and sacrifice. Through the exhibition, Goel invites viewers to look beyond the idea of the city as a destination and consider it as an emotional experience, where exhaustion and excitement, loneliness and belonging, and despair and hope coexist. The exhibition is open to visitors from 11 am to 7 pm at the Nehru Centre's AC Gallery, Worli, from October 13 to 19.Get the latest Bollywood & Entertainment News, and more.
