Justine Wilson, Elon Musk's first wife, is speaking out in a new documentary — including about the tech titan's estranged relationship with their daughter Vivian Jenna Wilson

"[The] most openly defiant was Jenna," Justine says in Alex Gibney's Musk

Musk has blasted Gibney and his lawyer has threatened legal action over the film

Justine Wilson , Elon Musk's first wife, is speaking out about the very public rift between the Tesla and SpaceX chief and their daughter Vivian Jenna Wilson , who is transgender.

Justine married Musk in 2000 , divorced him in 2008 and is one of the key subjects interviewed in Alex Gibney's new documentary, Musk , which is now open in select theaters and will be released nationwide on Oct. 16.

Gibney, an Oscar-winning documentarian, has been heavily criticized by Musk ahead of his new film's release, with an attorney for Musk threatening legal action for what they argued were factual distortions.

The roughly four-hour movie is a deep dive into the career and personal life of the world's richest man . In it, Justine, an author and mom of six of Musk's children (one of whom died in infancy), says his difficult relationship with Vivian goes back to when she was young.

"She is extremely strong-willed," Justine says in Musk of the 22-year-old model and activist. "Elon and I had five kids and the one who was most openly defiant was Jenna [Vivian's middle name]."

Justine says in the doc that when Vivian was 6 years old, Elon told her, "In this world there are winners and losers. Do you want to be a winner or do you want to be a loser?"

"The subtext there was, 'If you do not follow me and do what I say, you will be a loser,' " Justine adds.

Musk himself did not participate in Gibney's film and has publicly ridiculed it as a "hit piece." Instead — unusually — Gibney recreated a version of him using his past statements.

He and Vivian have traded very public criticisms of each other in recent years, with Musk attacking Vivian's trans identity.

While discussing his relationship with their daughter, Justine talks in Gibney's doc about the "pain" Vivian felt after Musk posted on X (which he has owned since 2022) that he had lost her to the "woke mind virus."

"Elon was telling her, through telling the world, what that point of view actually was," Justine says. "And Elon never tried to repair things, that's not in his nature."

"If a relationship ruptures, then it ruptures," Justine says of Musk's perspective.

Justine says Musk treated Vivian's transition like the "death of a child."

"I was like, 'We actually went through the actual death of an actual child,' " Justine recalls saying, referring to first son Nevada, who was killed at 10 weeks old by sudden infant death syndrome in 2002. "'And what's really happening here is this is a child growing up.' "

Justine says Musk told her to tell Vivian that "I'll always love her" — then cut off her health insurance the next day, after Vivian came out as trans.

More broadly, Justine reflected on what her ex might have been grappling with with their daughter. "If you do your job right as a parent, you get displaced by their life, which is no longer your life. There's a lot of emotion involved with that," she says.

Vivian, a model and activist who dropped her father's famous last name in 2022 , recently made clear her split with her dad over artificial intelligence during an interview with PEOPLE in September.

"Art is emotion through expression," she said while promoting the fall 2026 campaign for Spanish fashion label Desigual titled "Born to Disobey."

"Since emotion is inherently human, AI takes away any underlying intention," she continued, "and replaces it with plagiarized colors and shapes."

Musk is out in theaters nationwide on Oct. 16.
