Erin Foster, Tovah Feldshuh respond after 'Nobody Wants This' star Adam Brody calls to 'free Palestine'
The comments, made in a September interview with GQ, have since drawn backlash from some of Brody's collaborators on the show.
Adam Brody, the star of Nobody Wants This, expressed his support for the Palestinian people in a recent interview, stating that he believes the conflict in Gaza is a genocide. Brody plays a rabbi who explores an interfaith relationship in the hit Netflix series, which premiered in 2024.
The comments, made in a September interview with GQ , have since drawn criticism from some of Brody's collaborators on the show, including creator Erin Foster and actor Tovah Feldshuh, who plays Brody's onscreen mom.
In the GQ interview, Brody opened up about his history of activism and volunteer work with Swing Left , a political organization dedicated to educating voters in swing districts. When asked whether Hollywood had become more conservative, the actor said yes, then acknowledged that some of his peers' beliefs had surprised him.
"I wasn't looking under the hood too much, but you considered everyone to be like-minded," Brody said. "Between COVID, a second Trump term, Israel-Gaza, it's really brought out some different beliefs that I was ignorant to, and then disheartened by."
Brody went on to admit that while he's "spoken a lot" about the war between Israel and Hamas privately, he hasn't said much publicly. When asked whether he wanted to speak about it during the interview, Brody voiced his support for "a free Palestine," while also referring to the conflict in Gaza as genocide.
"Put me down as thinking it's a genocide," he said. "Put me down as wanting a free Palestine. It's awful that it's taken so much death and misery, but it does feel like it's reaching a breaking point that it should have a while ago. I'm hopeful that another administration can really do some good and correct some of these policies that are helping that situation be as awful as it is."
Erin Foster appeared on the Oct. 27 episode of Amanda Hirsch's Not Skinny but Not Fat podcast , during which she addressed Brody's stance.
"It's complicated," Foster said. "I think our work environment, our set is very similar to dinner tables around the world, where people are having debate and discussion and disagreeing. And, you know, while I love Adam, I also disagree with him, and that's OK."
Nobody Wants This is based on Foster's own experience of converting to Judaism before marrying her husband, Simon Tikhman, in 2019. While speaking to Hirsch, Foster voiced support for the show's "Jewish fans," adding, "I see you and I hear you and I understand how you feel."
"The show has always been and always will be a love letter to Judaism. That is why I made this show," she continued. "It's because of how beautiful of an experience I've had becoming Jewish and being a Jewish person. And sitting here right now, at this time in the world where there is almost zero positive representation of Jewish people, I think it's so important to have that."
In an interview with the New York Post published on Oct. 25, the Nobody Wants This star condemned celebrities who refer to the Israel-Hamas conflict as genocide. Tovah Feldshuh described the discourse as having a "horseshoe effect," where "socialism and antisemitism are trying to meet."
"To accuse the Jewish people of genocide is wild," she said. "It's right out of Hitler's playbook. You take the victim and you make the victim the perpetrator."
Feldshuh told the New York Post that such comments made by Jewish people themselves "makes a difference to the [Jewish] community."
"I believe that the perseverance of the existence of the state of Israel is crucial to the well-being of the democratic world and of the free world," she continued. "Of course, Israel needs the United States, [but] the United States needs Israel, believe you me."
Former rabbi consultant criticizes Brody
Steve Leder, who served as a rabbi consultant for Brody during Season 1 of Nobody Wants This , also criticized the actor's comments.
"Your pronouncement the other day about a genocide in Gaza was truly shocking," Leder said in an Instagram video posted on Sept. 29. "There is no genocide in Gaza."
