Lena Dunham has welcomed her first child with husband Luis Felber

Dunham has been open about her struggles with endometriosis and undergoing a hysterectomy to manage chronic pain, leading the couple to explore growing their family in different ways

The Girls creator, actress and author, 40, and her husband, Luis Felber , also 40, welcomed their first baby together, a daughter, via surrogate, sharing the news through an op-ed in Vogue .

Dunham and Felber tied the knot in September 2021. The actress confirmed the wedding date on her Instagram a few days after the official ceremony. "9*25*21 - that's how she became the nanny..." the actress captioned a wedding photo of the couple.

In the past, Dunham has opened up about how her journey to parenthood could look a little different than she expected. Throughout her memoir Famesick, Dunham touched on that struggle and wrote about when she asked doctors for a hysterectomy because of the intense pain from her endometriosis .

During an April interview with Jenna Bush Hager and Sheinelle Jones on Today with Jenna and Sheinelle , the writer recalled being with her mother on the day she asked for the procedure, saying her "full support" made things "so much clearer to me."

"It's interesting because the framing is that you make a choice to do this, but if you're in pain 24 hours a day, it isn't really a choice because no one can live like that," Dunham explained at the time. "And what breaks my heart is there are so many people who are living like that because the delay to diagnosis for endometriosis averages 10 years."

Dunham, who said she's always envisioned becoming a mom, went on to talk about how she grieved after having the surgery done.

"In the moment, my pain was so overriding that I put those other thoughts aside, and it was only in the aftermath of the surgery that I started to feel the weight of what had happened," she said. "Some people don't dream about being mothers, but I had, and it was a big part of my identity that I was going to do it someday in that way."

"The amazing thing is, since then, I have met so many people who built their families in so many different ways, and I have really come to a place where I feel really excited," continued Dunham. "Whatever way it happens, I will feel so grateful."

In July 2025, Dunham told The Times that she was in the process of "expanding" her family with Felber. During the conversation, the actress called her hysterectomy a "relief," adding that she just wanted to "safely" meet the couple's children.

"It was a grief but it was also a relief," she said. "I thought I would have the opportunity to experience my fertility and my cycle waning and it never was."

"Instead it was a very quick, sharp cut-off...I will say we're in the process of expanding our family in new ways," explained Dunham. "I want to safely meet our children and then figure out how to talk about it."
