BCCL, OpenAI strike partnership to expand news discovery and publishing experience

Bennett, Coleman & Co Ltd (BCCL) and OpenAI have entered into a strategic partnership aimed to help readers discover journalism from BCCL’s publications through ChatGPT, while strengthening attribution and access to original reporting.Under the partnership, content from participating BCCL publications, including The Times of India and The Economic Times, will be surfaced in ChatGPT when relevant to user queries. Select summaries or excerpts will identify the publication and provide a direct link to the original article, allowing users to access the complete report and context on BCCL platforms.The partnership will cover live reporting and content from BCCL’s English and Indian-language publications.“For almost two centuries, BCCL has believed that journalism is a public trust - rooted in facts, guided by independent judgment, and sustained by the trust of our readers,” said Mohit Jain, chief operating officer and board member, BCCL. He said the partnership would enable audiences to discover journalism from across BCCL’s publications while preserving the “source, context, and identity of the original reporting.”OpenAI vice-president, media partnerships, Varun Shetty said BCCL is an important part of how millions of people understand India and the world. “This partnership will help ChatGPT users discover reporting from BCCL’s English and Indian-language publications, with clear attribution and direct links to the original articles,” he said.The two companies will also explore applications of OpenAI technology across BCCL’s products, reader services and internal workflows. Areas under consideration include archive discovery, research, data analysis, translation, reader services and business operations.Any use of AI in BCCL newsrooms will remain subject to the editorial standards and policies of the respective publications, as well as human oversight.BCCL said its participating publications will retain complete editorial control over their journalism. Editors and journalists will continue to make decisions on reporting, verification, editing and publication, while OpenAI will have no role in determining their coverage or editorial positions.The partnership is part of OpenAI’s broader work with publishers globally to improve access to reliable information and explore AI applications across news products and publishing operations.Get the latest Business News and Live updates.
