Marathon Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: MPC ) has substantially outperformed the wider market and more than doubled in value since the beginning of 2026. The stock is currently trading near its all-time high, propelled by an unusually sharp jump in global refining margins as the ongoing disruptions have significantly reduced the global refining capacity and tightened supplies of gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel.
While there are now investor concerns that the American refining giant may have topped out, the analysts over at UBS think otherwise. On September 8, the firm raised its price target on MPC from $321 to $450, while reaffirming its 'Buy' rating. The revised target implies a further upside of over 14% from the current levels and is well beyond the stock's record high of just below $407 per share achieved earlier this month.
UBS believes that Marathon is well-positioned to create value as refining margins stay higher for longer than expected. In addition, the refiner's strong operational performance, disciplined spending, favorable West Coast market conditions, and high shareholder returns further support its upside.
Tight Fuel Supplies Boost Marathon's Outlook:
The key bullish argument for Marathon Petroleum is the continued strength of the global refining market, particularly following renewed escalations between Washington and Tehran. It is also worth mentioning that the situation extends beyond the conflict in the Middle East. While the region's refining output remains well below pre-war levels, a recent series of Ukrainian attacks on oil refineries in Russia has further constrained global supplies.
As the largest refiner by volume in the United States, Marathon has significant operating leverage when crack spreads expand. The company doubled its refining margins in the second quarter, helping drive an almost four-fold increase in its profits. If the global refining capacity remains constrained, which seems to be the case for now, MPC could continue delivering these unusually high profits and cash flows.
Marathon's high shareholder returns further add to its appeal. The refiner utilized its elevated cash flows and returned $2.8 billion to shareholders during Q2, up from $1 billion the same period a year ago. According to TD Cowen's Jason Gabelman, Marathon is expected to repurchase about 20% of its market value between Q3 and the end of next year, providing a potential boost to its per-share earnings.
